Them Some Back Roads

i can see the faces change as the sun goes down
reflections shine from window panes
they’re keeping me awake
on bedroom walls they’re painting lines
i see lateral misconduct every time
small apartment, low light glow
when it breaks i know my face won’t stay the same
every time i turn around
i can see the outline of a shadow now
the blinds could never keep
every time i make a sound
i can hear the remnants of a cry out loud
the blinds could never keep it out
i dream but i can’t sleep
i'm ignoring life to spread my wings
ever time i see the sun fade in
street lamp insomniac, wasting time and all of that
i know it’s not the best of things
i know i won’t stay the same
every night when the sun goes down
i’ll remove the windows from their frames
shoot out ever light that brings me back to that
small apartment, the low light glow
and when it breaks i hope my face won’t stay the same
the blinds will never keep it out
it’s the summer of sam cest la vie
sweeping softly through the city
if there were sleeping hearts they wouldn’t go far there’d be no room for all this pity
but we know the answer’s around the bend
when life is brimmed by loss then tell me
are we heaven sent
it’s the i don’t care sensibility, the driving force of this city
the creme de la creme fallacy that’s only spoken softly
in this summer of sam
if there were sleeping hearts they wouldn’t go far
i know we won’t stay the same
every night when the faces change

they want to know, "where are you going?"
as if i need to be going somewhere
but the years just melt away along with the confidence
im still scared of getting older
but im not holding on to anything
im still scared of getting old
but im not holding on to anything i don't believe in anymore
this is where i want to be, this is where i want to be going
growing older doesn’t mean we can’t be kids anymore
so we tape some cards on our back spokes
we trace the same old maps to follow a nowhere leading road
it's our time
seek shelter under pillows and blankets
safe by the flickering of the tv set
it's our time down here
and they’re asking me, "where are you going?"
as if i need to be going somewhere
but the years melt away along with the confidence
that im doing the right things right now
we can handle responsibility
that’s not what this is about
it’s growing older not growing up
doesn’t mean we can’t be kids anymore
so we tape some cards on our back spokes
we trace the same old maps to follow a nowhere leading road
this is where i want to be, this is not an in between
this is where i want to be going
still scared of getting older
but we’re not holding onto anything
yeah, we’re still scared of dying
but we’re not holding onto anything
this isn’t about getting older
growing old not growing up

they can fight the fight they want from mountain tops
they’re clinging to any life, and it’s no surprise
beautifully barren, trapped inside the walls
a graveyard's foundation, undone
they’ve become undone
they can fight the fight they want
as the soul survivors they need a drink to just let go
that’s what every person knows
and when halls seem haunted
they close their eyes and just lose hope
that’s what everybody knows
slightly debonair, and oh so fair
dancing a waltz while trapped in time
their secrets locked behind closed lips
meetings to place the blame on just one man
red halls and unlocked doors
rum soaked sheets have murdered scores
as they breathe in the dust from air, they let it settle
lungs choked in a pale affair
they’ve learned to just let it revel
as they talk about a death
there’s no honor in this
destroying innocence
here’s the maze now don’t go in
they can fight the fight they want
and they will set off the alarms
to bring any man down to his knees
and with not but axe and arms
he’d put his old faith down to sleep
